categories, galvanized steel tubing buildings, "red
iron" buildings, portable metal buildings, and
Quonset hut style buildings.
Galvanized Steel Tubing Buildings
Galvanized steel tubing buildings
are constructed from high gage square steel tubing
that has been "galvanized', (electroplated with zinc
to prevent rust and corrosion.) The roof and wall
panels are made from galvanized steel with baked
enamel finish. This type of metal building is often
used as a free-standing carport. Advantages to a
galvanized steel tubing building are, low cost, rust
& corrosion resistance, quick installation and
setup.
Red Iron Steel Buildings
Red iron steel buildings are
constructed typically constructed with iron and
steel super-skeleton of I-beam main frames. Each
frame is made up of two or more columns supporting a
rafter that runs laterally from one side of the
building to the other. Spaced at intervals between
the two end-walls, the main frames are the “axis” of
the I-beam building, and absorb most of the weight
load. Main-frame components may be hot-rolled

storage, church buildings, airplane hangars, and

Quonset Hut Style Buildings
Quonset hut style buildings
originated in 1941, when the U. S. Navy decided that
they needed an all-purpose, lightweight building
that could be shipped anywhere in the world and
assembled quickly and easily to support the troops
in WWII. The Navy found that they were able to
maximize the flexible interior space of these
structures since the building was an open clear-span
design. In addition, they discovered that the
rounded shape of the corrugated arch is one of the
strongest structures in architecture which provided
the shelter they needed during the war. The name
comes from their site of first manufacture, Quonset
Point, at the Davisville Naval Construction
Battalion Center in Rhode Island.
